New to our Education Collection: A Damon & Peets Favorite 6x10 Treadle Press

A special thanks to Wilson and June Barto who recently donated part of their printing collection, a Damon and Peets treadle printing press, to the education collection! Wilson Barto is a correspondent for our favorite local paper The Town and Country and publisher of The Buck Creek Press, in Harleysville PA. Barto retired as a newspaper editor in 1991 after spending 40 years in the printing industry. The Heritage Center delights in receiving his donation, as we are one of three institutions, including University of Arts and Rutgers University, that received part of his printing collection. This press is the first major step in our efforts to allow visitors to engage in various historical processes related to our archive and museum collections. Wilson is our latest education volunteer and will share his passion and knowledge (70+ years) about letterpress techniques and local printing history with our visitors and staff.

German Script and Handwriting Courses

Do you have old German books, newspapers, and documents printed before 1940 that you would like to read? This is a perfect opportunity for local historians, genealogists, and more. Develop a working knowledge of reading old fashioned styles of handwriting and German print through a series of workshops offered at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center and the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville this fall. All workshops are taught by Dr. Allen Viehmeyer. Workshops begin in September and range from $30-$40 for each workshop. Workshops are offered at both institutions. Visit our website or call for more information.

Featured Exhibit:
"By the Sweat of their Brow: Work and Workers in the Perkiomen Region"

Fegley photos Making Leber-wurst. Photograph from our collection, by H. Winslow Fegley.

Using H. Winslow Fegley’s extraordinary photographic record of rural work as a guide, the exhibit features the types of tools and equipment used for work in the home, farm, and rural trades that are in the museum collection of the Heritage Center. The types of workers, including apprentices, indentured servants, and slaves are explored using materials from the Heritage Center archives. Exhibit runs through September 2008.
