The Schwenkfelder Press in Operation
Wilson Barto, from Harleysville, joined us for two weeks of letterpress workshops. Wilson Barto is a correspondent for our favorite local paper The Town and Country and publisher of The Buck Creek Press, in Harleysville, PA. Barto retired as a newspaper editor in 1991 after spending 40 years in the printing industry. Small groups of students learned a simple process of letterpress printing from typesetting to operating the press. First, participants were introduced to the Damon and Peets printing press. After learning the parts of the press and viewing it in operation, students were shown how to typeset a line of type using 36pt type in a composing stick. Students dropped the line of type in a pre-set form. Did you miss the class? The diagram of our printing press, a layout of a california type case, and more can be found on our website, www.schwenkfelder.com
Get the presses rolling this summer! This summer, join Wilson and Heritage Center museum educator, Rebecca Lawrence, for three days of exploring the print collection from the Heritage Center archive. Day 1: explore 16th and 17th century imprints, learn why and how they were used to communicate radical ideas. Day 2: discover broadsides, early advertisements, and newspapers from the collection. Day 3: explore the art of letterpress printing using our 19th century press. Registration information can be found on our website, www.schwenkfelder.com. Eastertide Traditions Lecture On April 8, at noon, a small audience of 15 gathered to discuss local easter customs, moderated by Schwenkfelder staff Dr. Allen Viehmeyer and Rebecca Lawrence. A note of thanks goes to those who participated! Our Eastertide Traditions Lecture as well as the Christmastide Presentation bring local folks and tourists together to discuss holiday traditions and personal experiences from the region. What topics and questions did our group discuss? Nancy Civitts, who attends our Easter and Christmas programs, brought a Velveteen Rabbit, little wax candles, and ceramic eggs to share with the group. Our curator, Candace Perry, set out a small display of onion skin scratch eggs from the Heritage Center's collection. Others shared their experiences growing up in Pennsylvania, and even Bavaria! From memories of eating lamb, picking young dandelions, making hot bacon dressing, sharing folklore surrounding the dogwood tree, and buying their first suit at Easter, the hour was an informative program. Mark your calendars now for December 9th and 13th. All are welcome to bring photos, objects, and share stories about Christmastide traditions. Our First Homeschool Ice Cream Social: Thank You Freddy Hill Farms and Valley Homeschoolers!
On April 16th more than 130 visitors came to the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center to enjoy an afternoon of free ice cream sundaes, provided by Freddy Hill Farms in Lansdale, and learn more about the Heritage Center's education programming. A special thank you goes to Tamera Kells, the President of the Valley Homeschoolers, who put the word out to families and homeschool groups! We saw many new families spend the afternoon with us and many returning faces as well. Look for another event with the Valley Homeschoolers this fall! The Valley Homeschoolers is located in the Upper Perkiomen Valley and is a network of homeschool families. Kells organizes homeschool events throughout the region linking homeschoolers to libraries, museums, learning centers, social events, and more. If you are a homeschooler and would like to join the Valley Homeschoolers, Tamera Kells can be contacted via the Valley Homeschoolers website.
