Cotton in Pennsylvania German Life
Rainbow Quilt
ca. 1905-1915
Cotton
Attributed to Elizabeth (Schultz) (Mrs. Levi) Schultz (1860-?)
Palm, Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County
Gift of the Estate of Lloyd S. Schultz
1992

The name “Alfred” is embroidered in one corner of this quilt, denoting ownership by the donor’s brother, Alfred Schultz (1892-1963). A similar quilt was also made for the donor, Lloyd, but is more worn. Though the maker is not identified, the boys’ mother, Elizabeth, may have been the maker, as both grandmothers were deceased by the time the boys were born. The family was strongly Schwenkfelder, in their church affiliation and their heritage.

The Rainbow pattern was very popular in the Upper Perkiomen Valley area. Schwenkfelder Sadie Kriebel described the pattern to author Nancy Roan as using four colors – blue, red, green and yellow – and four shades of each color.
