Harry Boardman
Opening Exhibit Reception, Greenhill and Beyond Works Close to Home

Free and Open to the Public, Refreshments provided

Greenhill and Beyond: Works Close to Home explores Telford artist Harry Boardman's observations of his surroundings: his neighborhood, local wildlife, and farmland through his mixed media drawings and paintings. Boardman received his BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. The public is invited to the exhibit opening on June 5, from 7-9 pm. The exhibit will be on view at the Heritage Center through September 4, 2009.

Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Sacred Vocal Music in Pa German Culture

Exploring the History and Artistry of Fraktur
August 12-14, 2009
Workshop fee: $140 per person (includes lunch and coffee break)

Explore the world of history fraktur through the collections of the Mennonite Heritage Center and the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center. The workshop features both centers' historic fraktur collections along with presentations by fraktur experts. Presenters include: Joel Alderfer, Librarian/Curator at the Mennonite Heritage Center; Mary Jane Hershey, fraktur scholar, collector and author; Louise Hutchings, a fraktur artist and teacher; Lisa Minardi, assistant curator at Winterthur Museum; Candace Perry, Curator of Collections, Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center; John L. Ruth, historian and author; Allen Viehmeyer, Associate Director of Research at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center; and Bob Wood, author of local history titles. Fraktur Symposium, Free Library of Philadelphia

On Saturday, September 26th the Free Library of Philadelphia Rare Book Department will host a symposium featuring leading scholars in the fields of fraktur and Pennsylvania German studies, sponsored by the Barra Foundation as part of a major project to re-catalog the FLP fraktur collection and make it available in an online database. Ed Bieler retired from teaching American History for 32 years, at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and Upper Perkiomen High School, where he was also an officer with the Band Booster Club.  He was an elected member of the East Greenville Borough Council for fourteen years, serving part of that time as President of Council.  A tuba player, Ed has played with the Red Hill Band since 1963.  At Palm Schwenkfelder Church, he has been Choir Director since 1970, served on the Diaconate, and has been Moderator since 2000.  Ed has directed the United Schwenkfelder Choir since 1982. For the past eleven years, he has participated in the Upper Perkiomen Valley Relay for Life, first as a founder of a High School Team and lately on the Palm Church Relay Team.  In 2008, Ed received commendations from the PA House of Representatives, PA Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and the Borough of East Greenville for many years of community service to the Borough and the Upper Perkiomen Valley.
