Our next stop was Königstein, an old fortress for the defense of Dresden, capital of Saxony. Modern tourists can take the glass elevator to the top of the wall to enter the grounds.

The square in the old part of Pirna. In 1734 the Schwenkfelder immigrants reached the Elbe River in this town. This ended their overland trek from Berthelsdorf, and they now embarked on river boats to travel from Pirna to Altona (near Hamburg).

As the Schwenkfelders went by river boat down the Elbe, Dresden was the first major town they viewed. This is the recently restored Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in the heart of the city.

In following the footsteps of the Schwenkfelders, we felt that we had to go by boat, too - at least a short distance. It was a cool, overcast day when we traveled from Dresden to Meißen.

A view from the Elbe of the Albrecht Fortress on top of the hill in Meißen. One of many towns the Schwenkfelders passed on the boat.

The main square in Torgau. The Schwenkfelders passed this town. Martin Luther's widow, Katharina von Bora, died here in 1552.

The major attraction in Torgau is the Hartenfels Castle with its stone Renaissance staircase. The back of the castle is clearly visible from the Elbe River.
