Did you know people once believed that dandelion salads kept fevers away all year and on Maundy Thursday Pa Germans insisted on eating something green? In connection with the By the Sweat of Their Brow exhibit we’ll explore food preparation, recipes, and folklore beliefs in Pa German culture. Each day we’ll highlight a different season through traditional Pa German foods. August 5-8 2008
10 am- 3 pm; Ages 8 and up
$100 per participant

Join us as we travel back to the turn of the century in the life of H. Winslow Fegley, a commercial photographer who documented the lives of area Pennsylvania Germans. The exhibit, By the Sweat of Their Brow, features Fegley’s documentary photographs of men and women at work in the local landscape. We’ll travel throughout the changing countryside, documenting many of the same sites he photographed a century ago. We’ll compare our images of architecture, landscape, and people at work to his documentation and discuss the changes in labor and environment. Includes a visit to a Bauman’s Fruit Farm and a pick-your-own strawberry patch, Huff’s Church, Schwenkfelder meeting houses and more. One of your photographs may be submitted to our For the Beauty of the Earth open photography exhibit for children and adults in November 2008. You may bring your own digital camera or a disposable camera will be provided for you. Cost includes the development of 36 3x5 or 4x6 prints, one disposable camera, transportation and entrance fees for sites. Additional photo processing fees and purchases your child may want to purchase at the "pick your own" produce sites are not included. No photography experience required.
